The Importance and Sunnah of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah<\/span><\/h1>\n

This year, Dhul Hijjah will begin from Maghrib on 10th July 2021.<\/p>\n

Allah swears an oath by them, and swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance and great benefit. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “By the dawn; by the ten nights” [al-Fajr 89:1-2]<\/i><\/b>. Ibn \u2018Abbaas, Ibn al-Zubayr, Mujaahid and others of the earlier and later generations said that this refers to the first ten days of Dhu\u2019l-Hijjah. Ibn Katheer said: “This is the correct opinion.” (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 8\/413)<\/i><\/p>\n

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are often referred to as the best ten days of the year. Ibn \u2018Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.<\/strong>” The people asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2\/457)<\/i>.<\/p>\n

What must the Muslim avoid during these ten days if he wants to offer a sacrifice?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Sunnah indicates that the one who wants to offer a sacrifice must stop cutting his hair and nails and removing anything from his skin, from the beginning of the ten days until after he has offered his sacrifice, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When you see the new moon of Dhu\u2019l-Hijjah, if any one of you wants to offer a sacrifice, then he should stop cutting his hair and nails until he has offered his sacrifice.<\/strong>” According to another report he said: “He should not remove (literally, touch) anything from his hair or skin.<\/strong>” (reported by Muslim with four isnaads, 13\/146)<\/i>. There is nothing wrong with men or women washing their heads during the first ten days of Dhu\u2019l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) only forbade cutting the hair, not washing it. If a person was planning to offer a sacrifice, then he decides to go and perform Hajj, he should not cut his hair or nails if he wants to enter ihraam, because the Sunnah is only to cut hair and nails when necessary. But if he is performing Tamattu\u2019 [whereby he performs \u2018Umrah, comes out of ihraam and enters ihraam anew for Hajj], he should trim his hair at the end of his \u2018Umrah because this is part of the ritual.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These texts and others indicate that these ten days are better than all the other days of the year, with no exceptions, not even the last ten days of Ramadaan. But the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better, because they include Laylat al-Qadr (“the Night of Power”), which is better than a thousand months. Thus the various reports may be reconciled. (See Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5\/412)<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Erase all your sins<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most amazing things about Hajj is that, if your Hajj is accepted from you, your sins are completely erased and you are once more as pure as a newborn. But is there anything non-pilgrims can do to seek forgiveness on such a large scale during Dhul Hijjah?<\/p>\n

Pray at night – and fast during the day!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two months since the last ten nights of Ramadan, and many of us are missing the \u2018spiritual high\u2019 of seeking out Laylat al-Qadr through our nightly worship. But did you know that praying at night for the first ten nights of Dhul Hijjah is equivalent to praying on Laylat al-Qadr?<\/p>\n

‘There are no days more beloved to Allah that He be worshipped in them than the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah; fasting every day of them is the equivalent of fasting a year, and standing every night of them (in prayer) is equivalent of standing on the Night of Qadr<\/strong>‘. Tirmidhi<\/p>\n

The above hadith shows that Allah loves to be worshipped on these ten days, and one of the best ways to ensure you maximize your worship is by fasting all day and praying Tahajjud at night! When you sacrifice food, drink and sleep for Allah\u2019s sake, you are truly reaping the benefits of these blessed days.<\/p>\n

Fast on the Day of \u2019Arafah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are unable to fast for the whole ten days, try to fast on just the Day of \u2019Arafah,<\/a> the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Just as Laylatul Qadr is the most blessed night of the year, \u2018Arafah is the most blessed day of the year. The Prophet (saw) said, \u2019There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than on the day of \u2018Arafah\u2019.<\/strong> (Muslim)<\/p>\n

Like Laylatul Qadr, we should spend this day seeking forgiveness and availing ourselves of Allah\u2019s incredible mercy. On this day, non-pilgrims have the opportunity to extinguish the sins of two years by fasting! The Prophet (saw) said, \u2032It (fasting on the Day of \u2018Arafah) expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year\u2019.<\/strong> (Muslim)<\/p>\n

As we enter the first 10 days of this blessed month, our hearts and prayers are with those undertaking the holy pilgrimage of Hajj during these days. While many of us are unable to make the blessed journey this year, there are still many ways for us to reap the blessings of this month.<\/p>\n

Give more Sadaqah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn \u2018Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allah, nor greater in reward than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice.” He was asked, “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1\/357; its isnaad is hasan as stated in al-Irwaa\u2019, 3\/398)<\/i>. Whether you\u2019re helping around the house more, making a loved one a cup of tea, or simply smiling at your family, friends and colleagues – these actions become more valuable during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.\u00a0Many of us maximize our Sadaqah during the last ten nights of Ramadan, but the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are just as valuable. Don\u2019t miss out on this incredible opportunity to earn extra rewards for simple good deeds!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Performing Hajj and \u2018Umrah<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the best deeds that one can do during these ten days is to perform Hajj to the Sacred House of Allah. The one whom Allah helps to go on Hajj to His House and to perform all the rituals properly is included in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “An accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise.” Whoever is not able to go to Hajj should occupy himself at this blessed time by worshipping Allah, praying (salaat), reading Qur\u2019an, remembering Allah, making supplication (du\u2019aa\u2019), giving charity, honoring his parents, upholding the ties of kinship, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, and other good deeds and acts of worship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Give a Prophetic Qurbani<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the good deeds that will bring a person closer to Allah during these ten days is offering a sacrifice, by choosing a high-quality animal and fattening it, spending money for the sake of Allah. Abu Talhah (RA) reported, \u2018The Prophet (saw) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and [his] Prophethood\u2019.<\/strong> (Tabarani and Ahmad)<\/p>\n

For those who are able to, following the example of the Prophet (saw) and giving this extra Qurbani is an excellent way to gain reward during Dhul Hijjah. Not only will you be reviving a forgotten Sunnah, you will be also doubling your impact by feeding even more families a rare meal with meat during the days of Eid-ul-Adha.<\/p>\n

Do dhikr (remembrance of Allah)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
\n“That they might witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e., reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade, etc.), and mention the name of Allah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)…” [al-Hajj 22:28]<\/i><\/b>
\nThe majority of scholars agree that the “appointed days” are the first ten days of Dhu\u2019l-Hijjah, because of the words of Ibn \u2018Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): “The \u2018appointed days\u2019 are the first ten days (of Dhu\u2019l-Hijjah).”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded us to recite a lot of Tasbeeh (“Subhan-Allah”), Tahmeed (“Al-hamdu Lillaah”) and Takbeer (“Allahu akbar”) during this time. \u00a0
\n\u2018Abdullaah ibn \u2018Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (“La ilaaha ill-Allah”), Takbeer and Tahmeed.” (Reported by Ahmad, 7\/224; Ahmad Shaakir stated that it is saheeh).<\/p>\n
